Elementary Guidance Counselor

position description

The Counselor is responsible for the guidance and support services provided at the elementary and intermediate campuses.   This position provides a functional, comprehensive program of direct services for all children at the elementary and intermediate campuses.  These services will emphasize counseling children, consultation with teachers, parents, and other significant adults; and coordinating a variety of activities and functions related to the academic, social, emotional and physical needs of students.  It is the Counselor's duty to design and maintain student support services aligned with the vision, beliefs, mission, and expectations for student performance as defined by the school.  The Counselor will design and manage a system of referral services for counseling as needs are identified.  

essential functions and basic duties

  1. Maintain an active personal relationship with Christ and regular involvement in a local evangelical church.
  2. Counsels children, individually and in small groups, concerning a variety of developmental tasks and problems.
  3. Provide prevention programs through classroom guidance activities.
  4. Consults with teachers and parents about the development of Learner Centered Accommodation Plans to address social/emotional/academic needs.
  5. Collaborates with school staff and community representatives in assessing student needs and utilizes the data to plan and evaluate the guidance program.
  6. Refers students to the proper authorities for child abuse or neglect when suspicion and provides support services to those children as needed.
  7. Complete grade level analysis for intermediate grades at the end of each quarter.
  8. Assist principal with classroom placement.
  9. Assist in crisis prevention planning.
  10. Become proficient in the use of the RenWeb, and maintain oversight of student grading and posting of grades for the report card and to RenWeb.
  11. Assists or serves as the coordinator of testing to teachers and parents as needed.
  12. Meet with students, parents and staff as needed.
  13. Attend devotions and staff meetings.
  14. Provide counseling and support resources/services for students, teachers, and parents as needed.
  15. Keep accurate guidance and counseling records in accordance with Board policy and as directed by the Principal.
  16. Follow all school policies and procedures as set forth by the Board of Directors and Headmaster.
  17. Maintain confidentiality regarding matters of information related to students, parents, faculty or administration.
  18. Support the school's leadership to the parents and community in all written and oral communications.
  19. Perform other duties as assigned by Principal or Headmaster.

  1. Strives to maintain and improve professional competence through professional development activities.
  2. Participates in discussions or activities focused on using research to improve overall counseling/guidance.
  3. Participates in staff development focused on guidance, assessment, intervention strategies.
  4. Other duties as assigned by the supervisor or his/her designee.

education/certification

  • A college degree from an accredited college or university
  • State Certification for Counseling

required knowledge

  • Three or more years of successful counseling experience (preferred).
  • Experience working with students in elementary and intermediate grades.
  • Ability to organize time and resources.
  • Strong data tracking and analysis skills.
  • An ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with colleagues, families, and students.
  • A commitment to character development and family partnerships.
