LCA Students Bring Hope and Hands-On Service

LCA Students Bring Hope and Hands-On Service

Watch Recap Here.

Mar 30th - Lexington Christian Academy wrapped up another powerful Service Emphasis Week, and this year’s school‑wide initiative reminded everyone what can happen when students of all ages unite around a shared mission: making sure no child in Central Kentucky has to sleep on the floor.

Partnering with Sleep in Heavenly Peace – Richmond, KY Chapter, LCA students from preschool through 12th grade joined forces to collect bedding, raise funds, build beds, and deliver them directly into the homes of children who need them most. What unfolded over the course of the week was a beautiful picture of service in action—and a testimony to what it means to live out LCA’s commitment to a Biblical worldview.

Sleep in Heavenly Peace brought tools, materials, and experienced volunteers to help LCA students participate in every part of the process—from sanding boards and drilling frames to assembling slats and loading delivery trucks.

“We often say that no kid sleeps on the floor in our town, and partnerships like this make that mission possible,” said Cindy Thornsberry, Co‑President of the SHP Richmond Chapter. “Seeing students step up in such a meaningful way is inspiring.”

Her co-president, Kevin Thornsberry, added:
“These beds represent more than a place to sleep—they represent dignity, comfort, and hope. We’re grateful for the partnership with LCA.”

The week not only included the bed building project, but also the chance for every grade level to serve at local nonprofits all across the region, including Rockcastle County and Clark County just to name a few.

While the bed-building initiative served as the anchor project of the week, Service Emphasis Week expanded far beyond campus. Junior high students also spent an entire day serving across the community at organizations including:

  • Lexington Rescue Mission
  • Lighthouse Ministries
  • Lexington Parks & Recreation
  • God’s Pantry Food Bank
  • Bluegrass Christian Camp
  • Nathaniel Mission
  • Easterseals of the Bluegrass
  • Sayre Christian Village
  • Sleep in Heavenly Peace

Over 88 parent volunteers joined in to help guide and support students throughout the day.

“This is what it looks like when a school and community come together around a shared purpose,” shared Joel Simpson, Spiritual Life Director for the 6th Grade Academy and Junior High. “Our students are learning that service isn’t just something you talk about—it’s something you live.”

Inside LCA’s auxiliary gym, sawdust and teamwork filled the air as students participated in every step of the building process. Outside campus, students delivered smiles and comfort to children who will now go to sleep in a warm, safe bed.

Most importantly, students experienced firsthand what it looks like to serve with compassion, humility, and purpose—qualities LCA strives to cultivate all year long.

Service Emphasis Week may conclude each spring, but the impact of this year’s efforts will last far beyond a single week. For dozens of children across Central Kentucky, the beds delivered by LCA students represent more than furniture—they represent hope, dignity, and the love of Christ shown through the hands of His people.
