Expanding Horizons: Big Trips, Big Growth at LCA
March 20th, 2026 — Lexington Christian Academy Seniors and 8th graders have recently returned from their trips to New York and Washington, D.C., respectively. The students came out of the trips with not only great memories, but an appreciation for the opportunities offered at LCA.
Seniors Elizabeth Anne Black and Breckenridge Tatem joined their fellow senior class Eagles to The Big Apple, taking in the sights, sounds, and tastes of the “City That Never Sleeps.” Elizabeth Anne emphasized that seeing sights like the Statue of Liberty in person was something she’ll never forget.
“The biggest thing that stood out to me is that we had the opportunity to go on a cruise and go to the island that the Statue of Liberty is on, and I thought that was super cool and a great opportunity to get to see a little bit of history in person.”
Breckenridge added that the trip was not only educational, but also fun with the chance to spend quality time with friends.
“I had a great time in New York also. It was a lot of fun to go see my classmates there. And we got to learn all about the history of New York, and we had an awesome person that taught us about everything.”
Meanwhile, LCA’s 8th graders traveled to Washington, D.C. Chloe Harris and Lance Pruden were two of four students who had the honor of laying a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery, the other two students being Wyatt Moughamian and Harper McCallie.
Chloe said this moment was an honor not only because of what it represents to the nation, but also for what it means to her personally.
“Arlington National Cemetery stuck out to me because my grandfather, he was a veteran. I was really close with him, and as I was standing there, I was just thinking about him. It just meant the world to me to be able to do that, to honor him.”
Lance added that he feels the same way, with his family also being one of service.
“I also did the wreath laying at the cemetery, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and my great‑grandfather fought in World War Two, so that meant a whole lot to me, and I’ll remember it for a long time.”
Both Elizabeth Anne and Breckenridge agree that these trips are some of the many reasons they’re thankful to be at LCA, since it also gave them the chance to spend quality time with their teachers outside of the typical classroom setting.
“I was super grateful because LCA does have those opportunities. I have a lot of friends at other schools, and their senior trip is not the same. They get to go somewhere closer to home or not as long. The fact that we get to go all the way to New York and spend a week was super cool,” Elizabeth Anne said.
“The Lord has blessed us on this trip, and it was a lot of fun to go with our seniors, and I’m thankful for Mr. Merz again. He set up this whole trip for us, and it’s really a blessing to be able to go do this with our classmates,” Breckenridge added.
For our wreath layers Chloe and Lance, both agree that LCA is the best place to be.
“It means the world because I don’t think we’re going to get opportunities like that — to lay a wreath at a national cemetery or go anywhere like that with your friends and just be able to learn with your friends. It’s just a lot of fun,” Chloe said.
“I think it’s great that we go to this school and we’re able to go on trips like that and not only have the ability to go on those trips but also be able to connect that back to the Bible and things that we’ve learned in Bible class or church,” Lance added.
