The LCA Track and Field program features student athletes who are excellent on and of the Track. Not only is this group constantly winning championships, but they are also glorifying Christ in the process. Head Coach Tom Stickel and his staff continually push this program to be the best they can while showing all of their competitors what we stand for at LCA.
Tom Stickel
Head Cross Country/Track & Field Coach
Coach Stickel has guided the LCA Cross Country and Track programs to new heights. He, along with his coaches have won three state titles (two for boys cross country and one for boys track and field), the first in school history.
In 2016, Stickel was named the NFHS Kentucky Cross Country Coach of the Year, among the highest honors out there. His amazing ability to teach, his faith walk and passion for the kids has made him one of the best coaches in Kentucky.
Prior to joining LCA, Stickel was the head coach at Lafayette High School. He has also coached at Woodford County High School, Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, and Lancaster High School (Ohio). More than 85 student-athletes under his coaching have gone on to compete in cross country or track and field at the collegiate level.
Stickel's running experience includes 1979 Big School Team Ohio State Cross Country Championships (Lancaster High School), ranked first in the country. He was named a High School All-American for Cross Country in 1980. In 1983 he was a member of the All Regional Team Cross Country from the College of Southern Idaho and was a national championship qualifier. From 1989-1993 he was ranged in the top 3 in the Ohio Road Racing rankings.
Stickel is certified in physical education and is a S.A.F.E. teacher at Bryan Station Middle School. His wife, Brooke Patterson-Stickel, is Head Cross Country Coach and Asst. Track Coach at Woodford County. She is a four time All-American for track at the University of Kentucky and also participated in the 2004 USA Olympic Trial 800-meter run. They have two children, Macy and Kyle.
Jason Mullins
Assistant Track & Cross Country Coach
Prior to joining LCA as an assistant coach, Jason Mullins was an assistant coach with the Lexington Running Club from 2011-12. He was also an assistant coach with Lafayette Cross Country and has experience as a personal coach.
Mullins' running experience includes running cross country and track and field for Mt. Vernon High School (Ohio) from 1983-86. In 1985 he was named All District Cross Country, and in 1986 he set a school record in steeple chase and 4x800 meter relay.
Mullins graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in History from Clinch Valley College in 1991. He is employed with the Division of Child Support Enforcement. He is married to Ursula, who is a teacher at Picadome Elementary in Lexington. They have a daughter, Miranda, who attended Georgetown College, where she was on the cross country and track team.
